100 Years of Scouting
Here is an short summary about what Scouting was Like in New Brunswick approximately 50 years ago. The Scouts were getting ready to go to the first New Brunswick Jamboree to be held at Woodstock Island in 1958. The island was subsequently flooded by the Mactaquac headpond. They had read about the 2nd Canadian Rover Moot held in Sussex in 1956. In 1955 the Jamboree patrol from Fredericton had extensive training prior to going by train from Harvey to the 8th world Jamboree at Niagara-on-the-Lake. The 1st Canadian Jamboree was held in 1949 at Connaught Ranges near Ottawa. There is a long photograph of the Scouts from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island that attended. The Cubs were now able to go camping at Yoho with a building nearby. The Gyro Lodge built by the Gyro Club at the Bryan Priestman campsite was officially opened on October 2, 1955.
